Contents

Buy

This type of transaction represents real life purchase of investment when you pay certain amount of money taken from some account for certain number of shares. Sometimes this transaction includes commission paid to the broker who handles the transaction. This transaction decreases cash balance on the associated account and adds the shares to the portfolio.

Sell

This transaction is opposite to Buy. It represents sale of investment lot. This transaction increases cash balance on the associated account and decreases number of shares in the portfolio.

Dividend

Dividend transactions come handy when investment pays dividends in a form of cash. This transaction increases cash balance on the associated account and does not change number of shares in the portfolio.

Reinvest dividend

Most of the pension plans (like 401k in the U.S.) purchase new shares when investment pays dividend. This transaction is a mix of Buy and Dividend types, it doesn't change cash amount on the associated account, but adds new shares to the portfolio.

Add shares

This transaction type is very similar to Buy except it doesn't take any money from the associated account. This transaction type is useful if you just started to track performance of the existing portfolio and do not want to enter all previously recorded purchases of stocks. Note, that investments added with this transaction have zero cost as if you received them from somebody as a gift.

Remove shares

This transaction simply removes the specified number of the specified shares from the portfolio. It doesn't change cash balance on the associated account.
